Architecture decision record interview: defend a trade-off

For a technical decision interview, explain the context, alternatives, chosen approach and consequences. A tool name alone does not show the judgement behind an architecture choice. Include what would cause you to reconsider the decision.

Explain the constraint that made the decision reasonable

For a technical decision interview, explain the context, alternatives, chosen approach and consequences. A tool name alone does not show the judgement behind an architecture choice. Include what would cause you to reconsider the decision.

This original architecture decision record exercise is for senior applicants to international engineering teams in Europe. It concerns communicating a past or proposed decision, not drawing a complete system design. The format below is our practice template rather than a company requirement.

Choose how to share a pricing rule

Two fictional applications use the same pricing rule. One proposal creates a shared network service; another keeps the calculation in each application with a controlled update process. The teams release independently, the rule changes occasionally, and no latency or availability requirement has been specified.

Ask for the constraints before choosing. Discuss consistency, deployment coordination and dependency failure. Do not assume centralisation is automatically better. Identify what the shared service simplifies and what new responsibility it introduces.

Decision record worksheet
FieldWhat to explain
ContextWho uses the rule and what consistency means.
AlternativesShared service, shared package or controlled duplication.
DecisionThe selected approach under the stated constraints.
ConsequencesNew dependencies, ownership and update coordination.
ReconsiderationA requirement or observed failure that would change the choice.

Defend one option without dismissing the others

An illustrative answer is: 'I would first clarify how quickly rule changes must reach both applications. If immediate consistency is not required and independent availability matters, a versioned shared package may be worth considering. It avoids a runtime network dependency but still requires an update policy. If the rule must change centrally at once, I would reconsider a service and its operating requirements.' The choice follows the missing constraints.

For a past-experience answer, explain what you knew at the time and what happened afterwards. Acknowledge a consequence that did not go as expected. Do not claim the design was inevitable simply because the team ultimately chose it.

Follow-up questions to test your reasoning

  • What requirement would make your option unsuitable?
  • Who owns changes and handles failure?
  • How would you detect that the decision should be revisited?

Check that the record makes at least one alternative understandable. If every rejected option is described as obviously poor, you may be hiding the real trade-off. Separate your hindsight from the evidence available when the decision was made.

Prepare a short defence and a written record

Write the five fields, then explain them aloud without reading the full note. Ask a partner to change the consistency requirement. Update the recommendation and identify which consequence becomes more important. Keep confidential architecture details out of any external tool.

This is an original Cluegent practice exercise. Its scenario, example wording and suggested timings are illustrative, not an employer's assessment or scoring system. Use genuine experience in a real interview.

For optional preparation, paste the exercise into Cluegent as a typed prompt and ask for one follow-up at a time. Review the reasoning before adopting suggested wording. Redact personal and employer-confidential information. Try Cluegent on Windows or macOS; check the current trial and paid terms before downloading. Follow the employer's rules during an actual assessment.

Frequently asked questions

What should an architecture decision interview answer contain?

Explain context, constraints, alternatives, the decision, consequences and what would trigger reconsideration.

Do I need to defend my original choice forever?

No. Explain why it fit the earlier constraints and which new evidence or requirements would justify changing it.
