Check the meaning before building your answer
If an interview question in English is unclear, ask a short clarification before answering. Identify whether the uncertainty concerns a word, the scope or the expected detail. A focused question helps the interviewer correct the misunderstanding without restarting the entire conversation.
This guide is for applicants interviewing in English with international teams across Europe. It teaches a communication exercise rather than promising native-level fluency. Employers and interviewers vary; you do not need to imitate an accent or apologise for your language background.
Sort the ambiguity into a useful clarification
Our fictional interviewer asks, 'How would you make the service reliable?' You could answer about availability, data accuracy, retries or deployment safety. Ask what part of reliability matters in this scenario, then restate the goal you will address.
Now change the question to 'Tell me about a difficult stakeholder.' You understand the words but do not know whether the interviewer wants conflict resolution or project coordination. Ask whether they would like a particular kind of example, or choose a relevant one and state your interpretation.
| Uncertainty | A phrase to adapt |
|---|---|
| Scope | Should I focus on the API behaviour or the wider service design? |
| Term | When you say ownership here, do you mean delivery or ongoing operations? |
| Depth | Would you prefer a high-level approach before implementation details? |
| Confirmation | So the main goal is preventing duplicate orders; is that right? |
Move from the clarification into a direct answer
A worked exchange might be: 'Should I focus on availability or incorrect results?' The interviewer chooses incorrect results. You respond: 'Then I would start by defining the expected data and tracing where it changes. I would reproduce a failing example before choosing a fix.' The clarification narrows the problem and the answer follows it.
If you cannot recall a technical word, describe the concept accurately. For example, explain a repeated request producing the same intended effect rather than pretending to remember a definition. Ask whether your explanation matches the interviewer's intended concept. Avoid changing a question merely because another topic is easier.
Follow-up questions to test your reasoning
- Which part of the question did you clarify?
- Can you restate the agreed scope in one sentence?
- What would you say if the interviewer asks you to make an assumption?
Practise with a partner who deliberately leaves one detail ambiguous. Review whether your clarification was specific and whether you then answered. Repeatedly asking broad questions without progressing can conceal your thinking instead of improving it.
Build a small personal phrase bank
Choose phrases that sound natural when you say them. Rehearse the transition from question to answer, not a full script. Use the CV walkthrough for Germany if your next interview involves explaining submitted experience in English.
