React Native Interview Questions: Lists, State and Mobile Performance

Practice React Native interview answers on state, list identity, performance, native capabilities and offline actions with a slow-feed scenario.

Practice React Native interview answers on state, list identity, performance, native capabilities and offline actions with a slow-feed scenario. These original practice questions connect a concept to a decision and a failure case. They are preparation exercises, not leaked employer questions. State your assumptions before proposing an implementation.

Which React concepts carry into React Native?

Component composition, state and effects still matter, while the rendered host components and platform capabilities differ from browser HTML. Explain the interaction rather than assuming browser APIs are available. A shared business rule may be reusable while its visual controls and platform permissions require different implementations. State which layer you would share and what would need a mobile-specific boundary.

How do you diagnose a slow scrolling list?

Measure in an appropriate release-like environment and identify expensive rendering, work on relevant execution paths and loading behavior. Virtualized lists can limit rendered items, but unstable keys or unnecessary row work can still hurt. Do not memoize every component without evidence. Explain the user-visible symptom, the measurement and the smaller change that would test your hypothesis.

Why do stable keys matter?

They express item identity across list updates. An array position may be unstable when records are inserted, removed or reordered. Incorrect identity can preserve the wrong row state or cause unnecessary work. Use an identifier reflecting the data contract and test changes to the list. A key is not a database uniqueness policy, so establish both responsibilities separately.

How should native capabilities be integrated?

Identify the platform capability, supported environments, lifecycle and permission flow. Use an appropriate supported interface and define what happens when access is unavailable or denied. Avoid making the whole screen depend on an assumption that every device has the same capability. Test the fallback path and separate permission denial from a technical failure after permission was granted.

What does a reliable offline action need?

Track the action's local status and the durable identifier used when it is sent later. A queued action differs from a confirmed server result. Reconnection may deliver the same action more than once, so coordinate duplication at the appropriate boundary. Explain conflict handling and what users may edit while synchronization is pending. Cached reads alone do not establish this behavior.

Worked interview scenario

Original case: a feed freezes during rapid scrolling after each row starts expensive transformations and requests. First separate list-render work from data-loading work and reproduce under conditions that resemble the shipped app. Identify the specific repeated operation before adding caching.

Move or reduce work where measurement supports it, preserve stable record identity and control image or data loading. Test inserting a new record at the top while a user interacts with an existing row. If the feed supports offline reactions, show a pending state and ensure replay does not repeat the same reaction. Verify both smoothness and correctness; a faster screen showing the wrong row state is not a successful fix.

Practice exercise

Describe a performance investigation with a baseline, one hypothesis and one comparison measurement. Then explain how a queued reaction changes from pending to confirmed. Prepare a follow-up about a denied device permission and the fallback the user should receive.

Review your explanation

Use Cluegent during practice to challenge your own draft. Ask for a follow-up about the scenario's weakest assumption, answer it without suggestions, then check your reasoning against the official reference. Review current plans before subscribing. Follow the employer's tool policy in the actual interview.

It is most useful when you already understand the subject and need help staying structured under pressure.

Frequently asked questions

Does development-mode speed represent shipped performance?

Use an appropriate release-like measurement and state the device and workload. Development tooling can affect observed behavior.

Is React Native a browser rendering HTML?

Its ordinary host components render through the native platform. Distinguish reusable React concepts from browser-specific APIs.
