Kotlin Interview Questions: Null Safety, Collections and Coroutines

Practice Kotlin interview answers on nullability, val, data classes, collection operations and coroutine cancellation with a profile-loading exercise.

Practice Kotlin interview answers on nullability, val, data classes, collection operations and coroutine cancellation with a profile-loading exercise. These original practice questions connect a concept to a decision and a failure case. They are preparation exercises, not leaked employer questions. State your assumptions before proposing an implementation.

What does Kotlin null safety establish?

The type system distinguishes nullable and non-null types in Kotlin code. Explain how you handle absent values instead of treating the assertion operator as a routine conversion. External boundaries, initialization and interoperating code still require care. A field arriving from a remote source should be validated according to its meaning. Choose a fallback only when it represents a valid application state.

Does val make an object immutable?

It prevents reassignment of that variable; the referenced object may still expose mutable state. A val holding a mutable list can still have elements added. Explain both the reference and the object. A read-only collection interface also does not necessarily establish that no other owner can change the underlying data. Clarify whether the requirement is a stable snapshot or simply restricted access through one reference.

What should a data class represent?

It is useful for value-oriented models with generated behavior for declared primary-constructor properties. Decide which fields belong in equality and whether changes to those fields are meaningful. Avoid selecting a data class solely to reduce typing if the object has identity or lifecycle behavior that needs a different design. Explain how a model will be used in collections and compared in tests.

How do coroutines affect request lifetimes?

A coroutine can suspend while asynchronous work progresses, but its lifecycle still needs an owner. Explain the scope, how cancellation propagates and which operations cooperate with it. Starting work in an unrelated long-lived scope can disconnect it from the user's action. Distinguish a canceled wait from a business operation that already completed in an external system.

How would you transform a collection safely?

State whether the operation filters, maps or groups records and what result grain it produces. Consider repeated computation and whether a sequence or materialized collection fits the workload. Do not optimize a small collection before confirming its semantics. Explain how missing fields and duplicate identifiers are handled so the transformation does not silently invent or discard meaningful business data.

Worked interview scenario

Original case: a profile has a nullable display name and a required internal user ID. A developer uses a forced non-null assertion on both. Missing display names now crash the screen even though a fallback could be valid; a missing ID requires a different error path. Define these behaviors explicitly.

Next, load profile A and then profile B while A's request is still pending. Tie work to an appropriate scope and prevent A's late response from replacing B. Test both result orders and a canceled screen. Finally, show why declaring the profile variable as val does not necessarily prevent a mutable nested list from changing.

Practice exercise

List three nullable fields and classify each as optional, defaultable or invalid when absent. Explain your handling without using a forced assertion. Sketch the profile-request owner and its cancellation boundary. Finish with a small mutable-list example that distinguishes val from an immutable snapshot.

Review your explanation

Where Cluegent helps

Cluegent supports permitted live workflows with transcript context, typed prompts, screenshot-aware answers, resume context, custom response behavior, quick action buttons, and a private desktop overlay. It is most useful when you already understand the subject and need help staying structured under pressure.

Frequently asked questions

Does val guarantee deep immutability?

No. It prevents reassignment of the variable, while the referenced object may still be mutable.

Should I use a forced assertion for network fields?

Validate the field and handle absence according to its contract. A forced assertion can turn expected incomplete input into a runtime failure.
