Data Analyst Case Study Interview: Conversion Drop Example

Work through a data analyst interview case with a conversion-rate drop, segment calculations, validation checks and a concise recommendation.

Clarify the decision before calculating

A case study is not only a request for a chart. Ask what decision the analysis should support, how the metric is defined and what changed in the period being compared. Establish the unit of analysis: visitors, sessions, accounts or orders.

If conversion fell, confirm whether the denominator includes the same population in both periods. Check event definitions, missing data, duplicate records and time zones before treating the change as a product failure.

Worked dataset: a drop with no within-segment decline

Consider two traffic segments. In period one, returning visitors produce 40 purchases from 200 visits, while new visitors produce 10 purchases from 200 visits. Total conversion is 50 divided by 400, or 12.5%.

In period two, returning visitors produce 20 purchases from 100 visits, while new visitors produce 15 purchases from 300 visits. Total conversion is 35 divided by 400, or 8.75%. Returning-visitor conversion remains 20% and new-visitor conversion remains 5%. The overall drop is explained by a shift toward the lower-converting segment in this constructed dataset.

Explain what the calculation does and does not prove

The example shows why segmentation matters. It does not establish that the product is healthy in every respect or that traffic acquisition caused the shift. You would still check how segments are assigned, whether repeat visits are comparable and what other dimensions changed.

Describe the decrease as 3.75 percentage points. The relative decrease is 30%, because 3.75 divided by 12.5 equals 0.30. Mixing percentage points and percent can materially distort a recommendation.

Plan the next analysis

Check device, channel, geography and funnel stage when they are relevant to the business question. Avoid slicing until you find an interesting number without a hypothesis. For each breakdown, state what competing explanation it could distinguish.

If checkout errors increased on one device, investigate that path. If acquisition mix changed, assess the value and cost of the new traffic rather than assuming it should be removed. Conversion alone may not describe total business value.

Present a bounded recommendation

A clear recommendation separates the observed result, likely explanation and next decision. For this exercise: 'Overall conversion fell, but rates within the two provided segments stayed constant. The changed mix explains the arithmetic. I would validate segment definitions and investigate the acquisition change before recommending a checkout redesign.'

Mention missing information such as revenue per order, acquisition cost or uncertainty. A concise limitation strengthens the answer when it affects the decision.

Practice exercise

Recalculate both periods without a calculator first, then verify the arithmetic. Create a third period where new visitors convert at 4% while the traffic mix stays the same as period two. Explain how that changes your conclusion. Practise presenting the result to a manager in sixty seconds without statistical jargon.

During preparation, paste your own draft into Cluegent and ask for a skeptical follow-up, a missing assumption, and one concrete improvement. Answer again without suggestions. Frequently asked questions

Should I start a case study by writing SQL?

First clarify the decision, metric and data grain. Then use SQL or another tool to answer a defined question.

Is a conversion drop always a product problem?

No. Measurement changes, traffic mix and other factors can affect the aggregate. Investigate before recommending a product change.
