Business Analyst Interview Questions: From Vague Request to Verifiable Outcome

Business analysis answers should show how you discover the real need, make assumptions visible, align stakeholders, and define evidence of success.

A stakeholder asks for a dashboard. What do you do first?

Ask what decision the dashboard should support, who makes it, what they do today, and what happens when the information is late or wrong. Identify the smallest useful outcome before discussing fields or visual design. A requested feature is not necessarily the underlying need.

How do you elicit requirements?

Choose methods based on the people and uncertainty: interviews for individual context, workshops for shared decisions, observation for actual workflows, document analysis for existing rules, and prototypes for ambiguous interactions. Explain how you validate findings with the people affected.

Two stakeholders disagree on priority

Make the objectives, constraints, dependencies, risks, and decision authority explicit. Compare options against agreed criteria, document assumptions, and surface the consequence of delay. Facilitate the decision rather than pretending every request can be first.

How do you write a testable requirement?

Describe the actor, condition, behavior, and observable acceptance result. Replace words such as fast, easy, and flexible with measurable or demonstrable outcomes. Include error and boundary behavior. Keep the requirement independent from a specific implementation unless the technology is genuinely constrained.

How do you analyse a broken process?

Map the current flow, handoffs, queues, exceptions, data, and decision points. Use evidence to locate delay or rework. Confirm the root cause before recommending automation; automating an unclear process can make mistakes happen faster.

How would you measure whether a change worked?

Define a baseline and outcome before delivery. Combine business measures with quality and adoption signals. Explain the evaluation period and other factors that could affect the result. If measurement is unavailable, state what evidence can be observed and what remains unknown.

Prepare a business-analysis story bank

Build truthful examples for ambiguity, conflict, a changed requirement, process improvement, analysis error, and a difficult recommendation. For each, record the decision, evidence, stakeholder impact, and outcome. Ask AI to challenge missing assumptions, not to invent business metrics.
